Between marriages to William Powell and Clark Gable, Carole was romantically involved with singer Russ Columbo for a short time before his death. From my understanding, he accidently shot himself while looking at a gun at his friend's house. Carole was very devastated by his death. I've heard that his mother was kept from hearing the news, that his friends would send postcards to her in his name so that it would seem that he was still alive until she died. All I can say to that is "Wow".
